Phase I was a comprehensive classroom demonstration on the practical aspects and economic advantages of rational pile design and construction monitoring.

TxDOT Research Library – Design and Construction of Driven Pile Foundation – Volume I

The manual is intended to serve as a practical reference on driven pile foundations. Pilot workshop presentations were presented in Portland, Oregon in Octoberand Tallahassee, Florida in November In the early s, many pile design and construction monitoring practices resulted in unnecessarily conservative designs because they were based solely on experience and tradition with little theoretical background. Volume I of the manual addresses design aspects including subsurface exploration, laboratory testing, static analyses as well as specification and foundation report preparation.

Step by step procedures, workshop problems and solutions are provided to demonstrate use of the manual material. Because of this project, States have achieved substantial cost savings on major bridge projects.

To achieve this goal, the project was developed in different phases. Phase II field demonstrations of modern construction monitoring techniques included a wave equation computer program, the pile driving analyzer, rapid methods of static load testing, and the saximeter inspection assistance instrument.

Several agencies have implemented computerized design procedures and developed load test result databases. Feb 11 Field demonstrations were often performed in conjunction with construction projects, providing a direct comparison with existing State procedures and opportunities for cost savings.

Approximately 20 percent of all funds allotted to bridge construction by the FHWA and State and local transportation departments is spent on pile foundations.

An NHI course has been developed from these workshops and is available. Approximately 30 percent of agencies have made major revisions to their standard specifications for foundations.

The manual is directed to geotechnical, structural, and construction engineers involved in the design and construction of pile supported structures.

Volume II covers construction aspects including dynamic formulas, wave equation analyses, dynamic testing, static load testing, Statnamic testing, the Osterberg cell, as well as pile driving equipment, pile accessories, and pile installation inspection.

This manual is intended to serve a dual purpose, first as a participant’s manual for the Federal Highway Administration’s FHWA’s National Highway Institute courses on driven ffhwa foundations and secondly as FHWA’s primary reference of recommended practice for driven fhwwa foundations. Approximately 41 State agencies have used the pile driving analyzer, many now use routinely.

The results of each field demonstration were documented in a report that provided specific recommendations for improvement in State practices. Goble Rausche Likins and Associates, Incorporated. Design of Bridges and Retaining Walls; I Approximately 30 State agencies have implemented the wave equation computer program. Based on a survey, six impressive changes fnwa in State transportation agency piling practice during the life of this project: The 0013 has been completed and published in two volumes.
